The 40's

Today, I sat through my Foundations of Occupational Therapy class watching my cohort present information over a span of decades on what all has happened, some of it relating to OT while other parts of it just related to what was going on in the world. One decade that really got me thinking was the 1940's. Everything I know about this era has been taught to me through history classes and my elders, but today I got to learn about it from the point of view of a future Occupational Therapist. I never realized all the events that occurred in this time period that occupational therapists could have played a huge role in assisting.

During the 40's, World War II greatly increased the number of people would benefit from our services and this makes me think more of what we can do as servants to the population of Veterans, even today. Back then, an OT made less than 2,000 dollars and new trainings and certifications were just coming out.  I think that speaks volumes for where our profession has come and the populations that we serve now, whereas here the majority of people we served were the war veterans. Learning about the progression of OT overall really broadened my understanding of where we came from, which is key in being the best practitioner today.
