The Life Balance Model (LBM) falls within a cognitive frame of reference, addressing disabilities of all kind. This model can be used across any population and focuses on sustaining healthy, meaningful activities; which are important to any age group. The LBM highlights 4 dimensions in which a person should be able to engage in, including meeting basic ADLs, having rewarding relationships with others, feeling engaged or challenged, and having a positive self identity. The model is set up with 2 ovals, one being congruence and the other being equivalence. One oval is the actual vs desired time that a person spends on an activity and the other is the amount of time spent on the 4 basic dimensions of health defined above. Surrounding these ovals is one large oval in which supports and barriers are between the client and the environment. To be functional within this model, one needs to have an overlap between the two ovals demonstrating a balanced life.
This model could be used for a client with CP to see if they have an appropriate life balance and are getting what they wish to be out of life. You could assess social function and the ability for the lcient to participate. The most important part of this that I see is developing a positive self identity. Without that, one can slip into depression and negative self thoughts so easily, especially someone with a disability because they aren't "normally" functioning. This model explains how life balance is related to lower stress and higher self well-being.
