Analyzing health has never been something that I really thought to do. When I think about my own health, I picture a certain weight, no sickness, a clear state of mind. But for some, its so much more than that and a holistic type of health is a lot harder to come by. Some factors that go into health might include food, education, prevention, social justice, and a stable ecosystem. Most of these seem simple, but there is much more that goes into them. There are barriers to these for more people than I thought, and promoting a world-wide health takes more than simple healthy eating campaigns.
Another dynamic I found interesting is health and wellness, with wellness being defined as the outcome of health promotion, being the responsibility of the individual, family, community, or society. I think we as OTs really need to be aware of this relationship and do our best to assist our clients to achieve their health-related goals.
The Healthy People 2020 vision is something else that I think we really need to put into focus. After learning how low the US ranks on a first world country ranking of overall health, there need to be more moves made to get closer to this goal. I think a big start to this would be education. Educating the people on what health is, what people can do to be healthy, and making healthy food more accessible.
